Somelove: A Handwritten Font for Social Campaigns

The clock was ticking down to the launch of our spring collection, and the hero image for the Instagram carousel felt flat. We had the perfect product photography—bright, airy, and textured—but the typography overlay lacked soul. The standard sans-serif we usually rely on for clarity felt too cold for a campaign built around connection and warmth. That is when I pulled Somelove into the workflow. As a free-flowing handwritten font, it promised the human touch our brand identity was missing in that specific moment. What followed was not just a design tweak, but a shift in how we approached visual hierarchy across the entire digital ad set.

Bringing Human Warmth to Digital Spaces

In the world of social media graphics and fast-scrolling feeds, attention is the scarcest resource. Audiences are bombarded with polished, corporate-perfect visuals that often blend into a homogeneous background noise. Somelove cuts through this by offering a distinct personality. It does not scream for attention with bold weights or aggressive spacing; instead, it invites the viewer in with a relaxed, authentic vibe. This makes it an exceptional choice for lifestyle brands, boutique online shops, and creators who want their content to feel personal rather than manufactured.

When testing this typeface for a recent webinar banner, I noticed how its organic curves softened the rigid structure of the layout. The font’s natural flow mimics actual handwriting, which triggers a psychological response of trust and familiarity. For a product teaser or a quote graphic, this emotional resonance is invaluable. It transforms a simple announcement into a conversation. However, using a script font effectively requires restraint. It is not a tool for every job, but for the right message, it is powerful.

Technical Precision Meets Creative Freedom

One of the most frustrating aspects of working with decorative fonts is the lack of control over glyphs and swashes. Many designers settle for the default characters because accessing alternates is cumbersome. Somelove solves this with PUA encoding. For those unfamiliar with the term, this means you can access all the beautiful extra glyphs, ligatures, and swashes directly through your design software without needing complex code or special panels. This feature is a game-changer for maintaining efficiency during tight deadlines.

In practice, this allowed me to customize the word "Love" in our campaign headline with a unique flourish that balanced the composition perfectly. I could swap out standard letters for more dynamic alternates to avoid repetitive shapes, ensuring the logo-style text looked bespoke rather than typed. This level of customization is essential for high-end packaging design and editorial design where uniqueness is paramount. It turns a standard premium font into a flexible design asset that adapts to your specific creative vision.

Strategic Placement in Campaign Visuals

Where does Somelove fit best in a modern typography system? It shines as a display font. Use it for short headlines, callouts, and decorative titles. It is ideal for YouTube thumbnails where you need a pop of personality above a busy background, or for Pinterest pins that rely on strong visual hooks. In these contexts, the font’s readability remains high because the viewer is looking at just a few words.

However, context matters. I would not recommend using this handwritten font for long copy, dense information, or tiny text sizes. On mobile screens, intricate scripts can become illegible if scaled down too far. For body text in email promotions or detailed landing page headers, pair Somelove with a clean sans serif font. This contrast creates a clear visual hierarchy: the script draws the eye and sets the mood, while the sans serif delivers the information clearly. This pairing strategy ensures your message clarity is never compromised by aesthetic choices.

Readability Across Devices and Backgrounds

Designing for digital ads means accounting for various viewing conditions. I tested Somelove against both dark and light backgrounds. On light, airy backgrounds, the font’s thin strokes remain crisp and elegant. On darker backgrounds, it requires careful handling. You may need to increase the font size slightly or add a subtle drop shadow to maintain legibility, especially for viewers scrolling quickly on smaller devices. The key is to ensure there is enough contrast between the ink color and the background.

For reels covers and Instagram stories, keep the text centered and away from the interface elements. The flowing nature of the font means that ascenders and descenders can extend further than standard block letters. Giving the text breathing room prevents it from feeling cramped. When used in a branded template pack, consistency is key. Define specific rules for how and when to use the swashes to maintain brand recognition across all touchpoints.

Licensing and Professional Application

Before integrating any new typeface into client campaigns or merchandise, always review the commercial font licensing. Somelove is designed to be adaptable, but understanding the scope of usage is critical for professional integrity. Whether you are designing for a local business, creating digital products, or building a comprehensive brand identity, ensure your license covers web embedding, print runs, and social media usage. This due diligence protects both you and your clients.

Ultimately, Somelove is more than just a set of characters; it is a tool for storytelling. It bridges the gap between digital precision and human imperfection. By using it strategically in your social media graphics, email banners, and promotional visuals, you can create a more engaging and memorable experience for your audience. It reminds us that behind every screen is a person looking for connection, and sometimes, a handwritten touch is exactly what they need to see.
